I know I say this a lot but, I am pretty dang lucky to live in San Francisco. However, I find that I constantly feel like I am not taking advantage of this amazing place. Can you believe I’ve never visited the Legion of Honor, even after being told to visit several times while attending art school, I STILL never made it over there. Anyway, I finally went. The building itself is something to be seen. Lots of pillars, beautiful bits of sculptural architecture and of course lovely greenery surrounding.
I’m not really sure if the lovely people at the legion of honor really want people to picnic on their lush lawn or not, but that’s what we did. There was another family across the way doing the same thing so we felt like it was alright. It was a beautiful day and the perfect place to do it, we brought food from the store and just set up camp. After we were done we strolled into the museum full enough to fight off the temptation of the beautiful treats in the museum’s cafe. If you are interested though, totally go check out the beautiful sweet treats in the cafe, they are little works of art too!
Inside you will find mostly sculptural works by Rodin as well as a vast collection of paintings. It took us about an hour and a half to walk through the whole place, but we were also a little rushed for time so I *think* we could have spent more time there. I have always been a fan of the SF MoMA but while it is under construction this is a great place to visit to get your art on. On the bottom floor of the Legion of Honor the SF MoMA’s Matisse collection is on loan to view as well. If you are looking for other places to visit SF MoMa’s collection while they are closed check HERE. For anyone who is curious about the SF MoMA expansion, it is not due to open until 2016 *sad face* but have you seen what the new building is going to look like? The expansion will include a dedicated photography gallery, which obviously makes me super happy.
I know I am missing a long list of other great places that I need to visit in San Francisco.
